When a woman in Florida could not have a child of her own, she bought Rachel, a chimpanzee, and gave her bubble baths and dressed her in frilly clothing.

By the time she was three years old, Rachel was too big to be cared for as a pet, and her owners abandoned her at a research lab, where she was involved in a number of studies.....

Rachels Birthday!!

Today is Rachels 28th is birthday, Rachel was born in a primate breeding facility, purchased by an animal breeder and was then sold to a family in Florida. Rachel lived the first years of her life as a human child. She wore clothes, slept in beds and ate at the table with utensils, at 3 years old she was sold to LEMSIP laboratory as a research subject. Rachel did not fare well in research and had severe panic attacks and still suffers on occasion from a syndrome called floating hand. During these episodes Rachel believes her hand is not her own, biting it as it slaps her and pokes her in the eyes. Luckily these episodes are few and far between. Rachel has many chimpanzee friends but her best buddy lately is Regis. When they are apart it usually only lasts a couple of days, and then Rachel is quite anxious to be back together with her friend. Rachel is happiest when she is outside in the sun or in the sky walk. She loves hot tea and muffins in the morning and all cooked foods she is served especially mashed sweet potatoes. She also enjoys Sundays with all her special human friends.

Aujourd'hui, le 30 novembre, Rachel fête ses 27 ans. Elle est née dans un établissement destiné à l'élevage des primates, achetée par un éleveur puis vendue à une famille habitant en Floride. Rachel a vécu sa première année comme un enfant humain. Elle portait des vêtements, dormait dans un lit et mangeait à table avec des ustensiles. À trois ans, elle fut vendue au département de recherche du laboratoire LEMSIP. Elle ne s'est pas bien adaptée à la vie en laboratoire. Elle était sujette à des crises d'angoisse sévères et il lui arrive encore aujourd'hui de souffrir du syndrome de la main flottante. Lors de ces épisodes, Rachel croit que sa main n'est pas la sienne et la mordille alors que la main la frappe et lui blesse les yeux. Heureusement, ces épisodes sont peu fréquents et de plus en plus sporadiques.

"Rach" a plusieurs amis mais son copain préféré, c'est Toby. Elle s'ennuie lorsqu'elle est séparée de lui pendant plusieurs jours et elle a très hâte de le retrouver. Rachel est tellement heureuse lorsqu'elle est à l'extérieur au soleil ou dans la passerelle aérienne. Elle adore le thé bien chaud, les muffins qui lui sont servis le matin et tous les repas cuisinés, mais surtout les patates sucrés en purée. Rach aime bien aussi les dimanches passés en compagnie de ses amis humains.

You did everything wrong.

That was the message Jane Goodall got from her professors at Cambridge University where she enrolled for her Ph.D. after she began her ground-breaking study of chimpanzees in Tanzania's Gombe National Park.

"I was told I did it all wrong," Goodall, 76, said. "I shouldn't have given the chimpanzees names, I should have given them numbers. I shouldn't talk about them having personalities," or feelings, or thoughts; these, her teachers said, were only experienced by man......

Derek Donelle, 38, had traveled all the way from Montreal, Canada, to hear Goodall speak. He had first heard her speak four years ago and said it was life changing.

"She inspired me to change careers," Donelle said. He stopped working with computers and today works at a chimpanzee sanctuary in Canada called the Fauna Foundation.

These series of photos are Regis looking at a outdoor clothing and sports catalogue...as we can see he particularly enjoys the shoe section...and anyone that know Regis knows how much he love nice white running shoes. But they must be on your feet...as enrichment will just not due...what a guy!!

Mais elles doivent être sur vos pieds... L'activité d'enrichissement n'est pas satisfaisante...

Theme Days for the Chimps

The following enrichment theme days have been scheduled for the months of October and November. Help us make them the best possible for the chimps. Please look over the wish list and read the "How Can You Help?" section further down for details on what you can do to take part in these special days.

November:

Halloween: Orange, Black streamers, toys for Halloween, buckets,decorations (vampire, ghosts, skeletons, bats, spider webs) Witch brooms



Remembrance day: Poppies, arm print items, helmets, army toys



Space: glow in the dark stars, aluminum paper, space decorations



December:

Rachels' Magic Show: Top hats, stuffed animals, magic wands, scarves, cards, puzzle, stars

Peppers' squeaky clean: Scrub brushes, Small brooms/mops, dust pans, squeegees, paper towels, rags




Snow Party: Sliding items, mittens, hats, gloves, scarves



Christmas: decorations (garland, ornaments) candy canes, Christmas lights, wrapping paper, Santa decorations, elf decorations

Anything related to the above themes are welcome: feel free to surprise the Chimps with something from your imagination!!

**Anything that is soft plastic or soft rubber can not be used. Some of our residents love to eat these kinds of things.**
