Alamogordo and Fauna Foundation chimpanzees featured on CNN

NEAVS’ Project R&R: Release and Restitution for Chimpanzees in U.S. Labs YouTube video, as well as footage of chimpanzees from the Fauna Foundation, opened last week’s CNN’s ISSUES with Jane Velez-Mitchell. The show, which aired on Friday, 1/14 at 7 pm EST, focused on the victory – at least for now – for the Alamogordo chimpanzees. (See our January 5th eAlert for more information on the National Institutes of Health’s decision to halt their plans to move the Alamogordo chimpanzees to the Southwest National Primate Research Center for use in invasive research.) Alamogordo et les chimpanzés de la Fondation Fauna au réseau CNN

Dans le cadre de l'émission ISSUES avec Jane Velez-Mitchell, le réseau CNN présentait le 14 janvier dernier une vidéo sur YouTube de la NEAVS: Project R &R:Release and Restitution for Chimpanzees in U.S. labs, ainsi que des scènes filmées à la Fondation Fauna. L'émission faisait état de la victoire récente- et, nous l'espérons, définitive - en faveur des chimpanzés d'Alamogordo. Update on Alamogordo Chimpanzees....

2011 is off to a hopeful start for 186 chimpanzees at Alamogordo Primate Facility (APF), who have been granted a reprieve from transfer to a Texas laboratory for use in invasive research.

According to a National Institutes of Health (NIH) statement issued yesterday, the transfer will be delayed “pending an Institute of Medicine [the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences] in-depth analysis to reassess the scientific need for the continued use of chimpanzees….” The report is expected to take about two years.

NEAVS/Project R&R and other national groups, including Animal Protection of New Mexico, breathed a sigh of relief at this decision, which came after months of urging the NIH to keep the chimpanzees in New Mexico. APF, a holding facility, does not conduct experiments on the premises, and the individuals now housed there have been spared from research for the past 10 years. NIH’s plan to move them to the Southwest National Primate Research Center to be readily available for invasive research provoked national opposition, including from New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and other public figures.

Des nouvelles d'Alamogordo

L'année 2011 s'annonce prometteuse pour les 186 chimpanzés du Alamogordo Primate Facility (APF), dont le transfert vers un laboratoire de recheche biomédicale du Texas vient d'être reporté.
Selon l'annonce faite hier par le National Institutes of Health (NIH), le ministère de la santé des États-Unis, le transfert a été reporté «jusqu'à la publication par l'Institut de médécine, un organisme relevant de la National Academy of Sciences, d'une étude visant à ré-évaluer la nécessité scientifique de l'usage des chimpanzés en recherche médicale.» Le rapport est attendu d'ici deux ans.
La New-England Anti-vivisection Society (NEAVS) et le Projet R&R, ainsi que de nombreux organismes de protection des animaux, y compris ceux de la Société de protection des animaux du Nouveau-Mexique, se réjouissent de cette décision, laquelle résulte directement de leurs interventions auprès de la NIH.
L'Alamogordo Primate Facility est un centre de détention où il ne se pratique aucune recherche. Les chimpanzés qui y vivent n'ont pas été utilisés en recherche depuis les dix dernières années. Le projet de la NIH visant leur éventuel transfert vert le Southwest National Primate Research Center a donné lieu à une véritable levée de boucliers aux États-Unis et a été opposée par le gouverneur du Nouveau-Mexique, Bill Richardson et d'autres personnages publics.

New enrichment / Nouvelles activités d'enrichissement

Here are some pictures of new enrichment that was installed in one of the chimp house back play areas..a huge bed of nylon strapping that the chimps are just going to love!!
