This is a very choice place the chimps love. In the morning they are often found sitting out in their little hut together. Tom on his couch and Pepper lying on her cushion and Jethro just relaxing.

Volunteers Bring Project R&R to the DNC & RNC!
We were there in 2004 and now, in 2008, NEAVS/Project R&R volunteers were once again on hand at the Democratic and Republican National Conventions in Denver and Minneapolis-Saint Paul, this time distributing Project R&R literature and postcards to delegates and to the public. Thank you to all those who donated their time to bring GAPA to the heart of the national political conventions!

Following our eAlert last week asking people across the U.S. to write to their representative, two more representatives have signed on as co-sponsors to the Great Ape Protection Act (GAPA) H.R. 5852: Rep. George Miller [D-CA] and Donald Payne [D-NJ]. Thank you to all of you who are helping by contacting your legislators! We ask that you continue to write – either to ask for your legislators’ support by becoming a co-sponsor or to thank them for co-sponsoring if they are already on. NEAVS/Project R&R Leaders Make their Mark at International Primate Conference in Scotland
In August, NEAVS president Theodora Capaldo, EdD presented on a panel at the International Primatological Society 22nd Congress in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Congress is an international event that hosts hundreds of world experts on primates and research. Dr. Capaldo’s presentation, entitled: Humane Considerations Regarding the Use of Chimpanzees in Biomedical Research and Testing, was part of a symposium that presented on the use of great apes for invasive research and included science, policy, welfare, and current events. Making a poignant statement on the plight of chimpanzees in US labs, our newest outreach piece – a short (2 minute) video entitled “Release Chimpanzees” - is now online and features students speaking out on the issue. Produced by students at Boston University’s Adlab, we invite you to watch this moving video on YouTube and to send it to all your family and friends to help spread the word!
NEAVS/Project R&R Introduces Plight of Chimpanzees to Thousands

Last weekend NEAVS/Project R&R tabled at the second annual NY’s Capital Region Vegetarian Expo held in Saratoga Springs, NY. The table was graciously provided by The Albany Vegetarian Network who are committed to helping us get the word out. Thank you to them and to NY’ers Nancy Megna (NEAVS/Project R&R speaker and Program Associate) and Lisa Bradley as well as Vermonter and long standing committed volunteer Sheryl Rapée-Adams for providing their time, inspiration and valuable information to thousands of attendees!
NEAVS/Project R&R also participated in the day’s “Kid’s Corner” – giving children the opportunity to create personal art cards for Tom Chimpanzee – whose own artwork wowed the children and helped them learn about how intelligent, creative, feeling and amazing chimpanzees are. The postcards from the children will be sent to Tom who is in sanctuary at the Fauna Foundation.
Siblings Jake and Katie were hard at work on their beautiful greeting cards to Tom Chimpanzee.

Gifts for the chimps
Nicolas Chamberland is a 5 year old child that came to visit with his mom and he had prepared drawings for the chimps and the farm animals; he was extremely interested in all we had to say and was very impressed with his visit. He was quite a joy to be around and he may just possibly be a future Fauna volunteer.
Chance's Birthday/ Anniversaire de Chance
It was Chances's 25th birthday on September 11th. Chance is a sweet sensitive little girl that loves to be noticed. If anyone takes a little time to make her feel special she will be a loyal friend. Her friends these past weeks have been Toby and Rachel. Now that the days are cooler, Chance spends most of her time outside in the sun. We had a nice party with pizza and special cupcakes that our volunteer Sharon Stewart brought. Sharon and Kathleen also spent the afternoon making great enrichment with all the amazing toys she brought for the chimps.Le 11 septembre dernier c'était le 25ième anniversaire de Chance. Chance est une petite fille charmante et sensible qui aime être remarquée. Si quelqu'un prend un peu de temps pour lui faire sentir qu'elle est spéciale elle vous sera une amie loyale. Ces jours-ci ses amis sont Toby et Rachel. Maintenant que les journées sont plus fraîches, elle passe beaucoup de temps à l'extérieur au soleil. Nous lui avons fait une petite fête et servi de la pizza et des petits gateaux que nous avait amené une bénévole, Sharon Stewart. Sharon et Kathleen se sont affairées à faire de l'enrichissement avec tous les beaux cadeaux qu'elle avait apportées.

Project R&R had students from Boston University, Ad Lab ( graduate program in communications) , put together a youtube project for them. This ad features Pepper and will get thousands if not millions of viewers. It was meant to appeal specificially to college students.Please send to everyone we know.

Rachel has adopted two little stuffed gorillas that she carries around with her everywhere. She never lets them out of her site. If she does forget one in a room when we clean we make sure to get it back to her immediately. When this happens she is extremely thankful that we returned it and looks at her baby to make sure all is good, rubs it on her belly then puts it in her little pelvic pouch and off she goes. In case some are wondering, chimpanzees carry around precious items in the space between the upper thigh and their bellies; which is called a pelvic pouch.Rachel a adopté 2 petits gorilles en peluche qu'elle trimbale avec elle. Elle garde un oeil sur eux. Si elle en oublie un dans une pièce lorsque nous faisons le nettoyage nous lui ramenons prestement. Elle est alors très reconnaissante, elle regarde le bébé pour s'assurer que tout y est, elle le frotte sur son ventre puis elle le remet dans sa poche pelvienne et elle poursuit ses activités. Pour tous ceux qui l'ignore, les chimpanzés transportent des objets précieux dans la région située entre le haut de la cuisse et le ventre. C'est ce que nous appelons la poche pelvienne.

Binky's Pick of the Month / La recette de Binky
The chimpanzees have a special menu which includes fresh baking and hot meals; here is one of Binky's big hits of the month. Binky has be called the "Muffin Man" seeing that he gets totally beside himself when we come around with fresh muffins.Les chimpanzés ont un menu spécial qui inclus des repas cuisinés sur place
et des repas chauds. Voici donc le choix préféré de Binky. Il a été surnommé "Muffin Man" puisqu'il devient complètement fou lorsqu'il nous voit arrivé avec un plateau de muffins tous chauds.
Blueberry Yogurt Muffins.
Makes 96 muffins
16 cups of flour 2 cups of sugar
8 tsp baking powder
2 tsp salt
2 cups of orange juice
16 tbl of vegetable oil
8 cups of non fat plain yogurt
1/4 c of egg substitute
8 cups of blueberries
1. Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl; make a well in the center of the mixture.
2. Combine orange juice and next 4 ingredients; stir well
3. Add to dry ingredients, stirring until just moistened.
4. Gently fold in blueberries.
5. Divide batter evenly among 12 muffin cups coated with cooking spray
6. Bake at 400 degrees for 18 minutes or until golden.
Muffins aux bleuets et au yaourt
pour 96 muffins
16 tasses de farine
2 tasses du sucre
8 c. à thé de poudre à pâte
2 c. à thé de sel
2 tasses de jus d'orange
16 c. à thé d'huile végétale
8 tasses de yaourt nature sans gras
1/4 tasse de substitut d'oeufs
8 tasses de bleuets
Séparer la préparation en 8 plateaux de 12 muffins enduits de vaporisateur à cuisson.
Cuire à 400 degrés pendant 18 minutes ou lorsqu'ils sont bien dorés.
