This past September Sharon Steward, a long time volunteer/donor came for her annual volunteer day with on of her friends XXXX and took some amazing pictures of the chimps. Here a just a couple of them...more to come...

Theme Days for the Chimps /Journées thématiques pour les chimpanzés

The following enrichment theme days have been scheduled for the coming months. Help us make them the best possible for the chimps. Please look over the wish list and read the "How Can You Help?" section further down for details on what you can do to take part in these special days.

Les journées thématiques suivantes sont prévues pour les mois à venir. Pour y participer, consulter la liste d'objets convoités et suivre les instructions qui figurent dans la rubrique «Comment participer».

January /Janvier:

New Years: Streamers, Confetti, empty paper rolls, noise makers, party hats, any new years' decorations

Baking: Wooden spoons, spatulas, plastic cookie cutters, old recipe books, oven mittens, plastic fruit&veggies, aprons

Anything related to the above themes are welcome: feel free to surprise the Chimps with something from your imagination!!

Nous accepterons avec plaisir tout objet relié aux thèmes décrits ci-haut. Laissez aller votre imagination et faites une surprise aux chimpanzés!

**Items that are soft plastic or soft rubber can not be used. Some of our residents love to eat these kinds of things.**

3) General Donation. If you can't find one Theme in particular you would like to sponsor, you can make a general donation for the Fauna Enrichment Theme Days and we will ensure that 100% of your donation will be used to provide the chimps with an exciting day.

Regis the Birthday Boy / L'anniversaire de Regis

Today the birthday boy is our sweet Regis...he is 22.

Regis was only 2 when he was treated for his first stress-related event--he chewed his finger nail completely off. The following year he was treated for depression and anorexia (he weighed less than 20 pounds at 3 years of age). He had still not participated in any study. During the 3 studies Ch-645 was involved in, he was lethargic, withdrawn and depressed. He refused to eat and drink. When he is particularly stressed he suffers from anxiety attacks during which he nearly stops breathing - so badly is he gagging and convulsing. It took over an hour for this very stressed, very anxious chimpanzee to leave his transport cage and enter his sanctuary home.

Regis is a sensitive, loving, considerate, and kind chimpanzee, with soft and soulful eyes that give you a peek into who he really is. He is creative, artistic, clever and a bit of a joker. He likes to play tricks on us, and finds it very amusing when he succeeds in putting us in a sensitive situation, like luring us in too close, giving him the upper hand. Regis is musically inclined. He has rhythm and is interested in listening to others play instruments or sing. He also loves to fill his mouth with a full bottle of water and wait for an unsuspecting human to turn the corner and unload his little gift, then he takes off running...quite proud of himself...it is a game he loves to play.

These past weeks Regis has been having a good old time with Rachel, they groom and sit together for long periods of time and Regis keeps on stealing Rachels baby gorillas!! Now he has one of his own, and is happy to show us his little guy when we ask him what he is hiding!

Aujourd'hui, notre cher Regis fête ses 22 ans.

Regis n'avait que deux ans quand il a commencé à manifester les premiers signes de traumatisme psychologique. Il s'était alors rongé les ongles jusqu'à se les arracher. L'année suivante, il a dû être traité pour de la dépression et de l'anorexie -il pesait à peine 10 kilos- alors qu'il n'avait même pas encore été utilisé en recherche.

Au cours des trois projets de recherche dans lesquels il a été utilisé, il était léthargique et déprimé et refusait toute nourriture. Quand Regis est stressé, il souffre de crises d'angoisse au cours desquelles il arrête pratiquement de respirer et est en proie à des hauts-le-coeur et des convulsions. Quand il est arrivé au sanctuaire, il était si traumatisé qu'il lui a fallu plus d'une heure pour quitter sa cage pour entrer dans sa nouvelle demeure.

Regis est un chimpanzé sensible, aimant et attentionné. Son regard plein de douceur en dit long sur sa vraie nature. Il est créatif, talentueux, très perspicace et un peu blagueur. Il aime bien jouer des tours et rien ne lui plaît autant que de nous embobiner pour nous mettre dans une situation où c'est lui qui a le dessus. Il est doué pour la musique. Il a du rythme et aime bien écouter quelqu'un chanter ou jouer d'un instrument. Il adore aussi prendre une bonne gorgée d'eau et attendre qu'un pauvre humain sans méfiance tourne le coin pour l'asperger.

Dernièrement, Regis aime bien la compagnie de Rachel. Ils se font la toilette et passent de longues heures assis ensemble. Il n'arrête pas de lui voler ses bébés gorilles. Maintenant qu'il en a un à lui, il est tout fier de nous le montrer lorsqu'on le lui demande.

Amazing new sky walks for the Chimps

Here is the first look and the new connecting sky walks that are being added to the chimp house...

The first tunnel that was added on last week was from Billy Jo's island to connect to the original sky walk stemming directly off the chimp house building...
Le premier tunnel a été ajouté la semaine dernière pour joindre l'île de Billy Jo à la passerelle aérienne existante afin de pouvoir accéder à la maison des chimpanzés...


The next set of photos are the construction of the second sky walk stemming off the mezzanine area of the chimp house just over the observation area; connecting to the same sky walk as the above photos, only on a different section just off the stair case...

When a woman in Florida could not have a child of her own, she bought Rachel, a chimpanzee, and gave her bubble baths and dressed her in frilly clothing.

By the time she was three years old, Rachel was too big to be cared for as a pet, and her owners abandoned her at a research lab, where she was involved in a number of studies.....

Rachels Birthday!!

Today is Rachels 28th is birthday, Rachel was born in a primate breeding facility, purchased by an animal breeder and was then sold to a family in Florida. Rachel lived the first years of her life as a human child. She wore clothes, slept in beds and ate at the table with utensils, at 3 years old she was sold to LEMSIP laboratory as a research subject. Rachel did not fare well in research and had severe panic attacks and still suffers on occasion from a syndrome called floating hand. During these episodes Rachel believes her hand is not her own, biting it as it slaps her and pokes her in the eyes. Luckily these episodes are few and far between. Rachel has many chimpanzee friends but her best buddy lately is Regis. When they are apart it usually only lasts a couple of days, and then Rachel is quite anxious to be back together with her friend. Rachel is happiest when she is outside in the sun or in the sky walk. She loves hot tea and muffins in the morning and all cooked foods she is served especially mashed sweet potatoes. She also enjoys Sundays with all her special human friends.

Aujourd'hui, le 30 novembre, Rachel fête ses 27 ans. Elle est née dans un établissement destiné à l'élevage des primates, achetée par un éleveur puis vendue à une famille habitant en Floride. Rachel a vécu sa première année comme un enfant humain. Elle portait des vêtements, dormait dans un lit et mangeait à table avec des ustensiles. À trois ans, elle fut vendue au département de recherche du laboratoire LEMSIP. Elle ne s'est pas bien adaptée à la vie en laboratoire. Elle était sujette à des crises d'angoisse sévères et il lui arrive encore aujourd'hui de souffrir du syndrome de la main flottante. Lors de ces épisodes, Rachel croit que sa main n'est pas la sienne et la mordille alors que la main la frappe et lui blesse les yeux. Heureusement, ces épisodes sont peu fréquents et de plus en plus sporadiques.

"Rach" a plusieurs amis mais son copain préféré, c'est Toby. Elle s'ennuie lorsqu'elle est séparée de lui pendant plusieurs jours et elle a très hâte de le retrouver. Rachel est tellement heureuse lorsqu'elle est à l'extérieur au soleil ou dans la passerelle aérienne. Elle adore le thé bien chaud, les muffins qui lui sont servis le matin et tous les repas cuisinés, mais surtout les patates sucrés en purée. Rach aime bien aussi les dimanches passés en compagnie de ses amis humains.

You did everything wrong.

That was the message Jane Goodall got from her professors at Cambridge University where she enrolled for her Ph.D. after she began her ground-breaking study of chimpanzees in Tanzania's Gombe National Park.

"I was told I did it all wrong," Goodall, 76, said. "I shouldn't have given the chimpanzees names, I should have given them numbers. I shouldn't talk about them having personalities," or feelings, or thoughts; these, her teachers said, were only experienced by man......

Our very own Derek Donelle was mentioned in the following article !!!

Derek Donelle, 38, had traveled all the way from Montreal, Canada, to hear Goodall speak. He had first heard her speak four years ago and said it was life changing.

"She inspired me to change careers," Donelle said. He stopped working with computers and today works at a chimpanzee sanctuary in Canada called the Fauna Foundation.

These series of photos are Regis looking at a outdoor clothing and sports catalogue...as we can see he particularly enjoys the shoe section...and anyone that know Regis knows how much he love nice white running shoes. But they must be on your feet...as enrichment will just not due...what a guy!!

Les photos montrent Regis qui regarde un catalogue de vêtements d'extérieur et pour le sport... comme on peut le constater il aime particulièrement la section chaussure... et quiconque connait Regis sait qu'il adore les belles chaussures de course blanches. Mais elles doivent être sur vos pieds... L'activité d'enrichissement n'est pas satisfaisante...
