Spock's Birthday /L'anniversaire de Spock

Today is Spock's 35th birthday!! Like Maya, Spock was also born in captivity, in Norman, Oklahoma and sold to The University of Montreal to be raised as a human child.

With no chimpanzee mother of his own, he had to trust a human mother. He grew very close to other chimpanzee children in this human and unnatural environment.

As usual with this kind of cross-fostering experiment, his fate included eventual separation from the humans he grew to love and know when the research ended.

Then, he was sent to the Quebec City Zoo, where he lived “ on exhibit” as part of the “animal collection” for the next 25 years, until his rescue by Fauna.

Spock is a real darling. He is kind, sensitive, gentle, loyal and considerate. It would be hard not to like him. He loves women and, with time, started to accept the friendship of men. (We were told that while at the zoo, he was not too fond of most men). He can still become anxious if there are too many men walking past his area. In fact, the only things that really upset him seem to be too many people near his enclosure and the loud noise of the pressure washer on cleaning day.

Spock is funny and fun to be with. Given how very polite, sweet, and loving he is, he is easy to spend time with and everyone enjoys his playful company.

These past weeks he has been having a good old time playing, chasing and grooming with Binky and Jethro. However, the relationship does get a little explosive sometimes; if Spock pays more attention to Jethro, there will be a big...loud..and scary display from the "Bub", but it is always resolved with much hugging, forgiveness and grooming...

Spock fête aujourd’hui ses 35 ans!!

Tout comme Maya, Spock est né en captivité à Norman en Oklahoma et a été vendu à l’Université de Montréal pour être élevé comme un petit d’humain. Séparé de sa maman, il lui a fallu s’habituer à une mère humaine et il s’est rapidement lié d’amitié avec les autres jeunes chimpanzés de son milieu de vie dénaturé.

Comme il arrive toujours lorsque ce genre d’expérience prend fin, il a été séparé des humains auxquels il s’était attaché et s’est retrouvé au jardin zoologique de la Ville de Québec. Il y a passé les 25 années suivantes à faire partie de la «collection» d’animaux mis en exhibition, jusqu’à ce que la Fondation Fauna vienne à son secours.

Spock est un amour; il est tendre, aimant, loyal et plein d’attentions pour ceux qui l’entourent. Ce serait difficile de ne pas l’aimer. Il aime particulièrement les femmes, mais, avec le temps, il a appris à apprécier aussi la compagnie des hommes. Il paraît qu’au zoo, il se tenait à l’écart de la gent masculine et il lui arrive encore de manifester de l’anxiété lorsqu’il y trop d’hommes dans son entourage. C’est à peu près la seule chose qui l’indispose, exception faite du bruit infernal de la laveuse à pression les jours de ménage.

Spock est un type drôle et amusant. Sa politesse et sa gentillesse en font un compagnon agréable pour tous. Ces derniers temps, il s’amuse bien avec Binky et Jethro; ils se pourchassent et se font la toilette mutuellement. S’il arrive, par malheur, que Binky se sente mis à l’écart, la situation peut devenir explosive, mais Spock réussit toujours à calmer le jeu, à force de le cajoler et de câliner.
