We often talk about the chimps laughing in our newsletters or on the blog, and to someone who does not know that chimpanzees do laugh, this sound a little peculiar. However, it is the most amazing thing to hear. It is a very soft sound; it sounds a bit like someone taking quick consecutive little breaths out loud. It is most often done with an open mouth and even sometimes with a closed mouth and quick breathing through the nose...It is quite surprising how long the chimps can laugh for, when we humans try to do it for that long we feel like fainting.
Here is a perfect example of some amazing chimp laughter between Binky and Spock. Notice how they tap each other on the head and hold hands. At one point we can only see Spock bent over his little bum in the air, he is actually holding on to Binky's toes with his mouth all the while holding his leg and laughing at the same time.
Certains pourraient être surpris lorsque nous faisons allusion au rire des chimpanzés dans nos communications. Et pourtant, le rire fait bel et bien partie de leur mode d’expression. C’est un rire bien particulier, très doux, qui ressemble au bruit d’une respiration courte et saccadée. Parfois ils rient la bouche ouverte, mais parfois aussi la bouche fermée, en respirant rapidement par le nez. Il est surprenant de voir la durée d’un accès de rire chez le chimpanzé; un humain pris d’un accès de rire aussi prolongé s’évanouirait sûrement.
Voici l’exemple parfait d’une bonne risée partagée par Binky et Spock. Remarquez leur façon de se taper sur la tête et de se tenir les mains. Là où on aperçoit Spock le fessier en l’air, il a pris les doigts de pied de Binky dans sa bouche et il lui tient la jambe en riant.
