One morning after cleaning and enriching the rooms for the chimps, we had given Binky a light stick. He just loved it. Like all the others here at Fauna, he had to do his taste test first, and then he could enjoy the colors once he realized it was not fun to eat. Binky was totally entertaining us and he knew it; the more we laughed at his cute antics, the more he would do it. He was waving the flashing stick around and then he would jump up, look at us, sit down quickly and put it right to his eyes and laugh. This lasted as long as he had an audience. When we had to go back to work, he cracked the stick in two, looked inside to see if we had hidden any treats and then, off he went! What a guy…

Un matin, après le nettoyage des pièces, on a offert à Binky un bâton lumineux. Il en était ravi. Comme le font toujours les chimpanzés, il a commencé par y goûter puis, ayant constaté que ce n’était pas bon à manger, il s’est intéressé au jeu des couleurs. C’est alors que le spectacle a commencé. Il était très fier de lui et plus on riait, plus il faisait le pitre, brandissant le bâton un peu partout, s’élançant, nous regardant, se rasseyant puis dirigeant le jet lumineux dans ses yeux en riant. Ce manège a duré aussi longtemps qu’il a eu son auditoire. Quand nous avons dû reprendre le travail, il a cassé le bâton en deux, a vérifié à l’intérieur pour voir si on y avait caché des gâteries, puis est reparti! Quel numéro…
